Minister Martin Announces State Recognition of Key Practices of Ireland’s Living Cultural Heritage
Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, has extended the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage to give State recognition to a further 8 key practices of Ireland’s Living Cultural Heritage.
The practices now being recognised are Beekeeping, Clones Crochet Lace Making, Headford Lace Making, Irish Traditional Travelling Circus and Funfair, Lá an Dreoilín/Wren’s Day, Native Irish Cattle Breeding, The Tradition of Spancilhill International Horse Fair, Traditional Seine Boat Building, Fishing and Racing.
Minister Martin said:
“These eight living cultural heritage practices require knowledge and skill, and foster our sense of community and place. These practices thrive through the dedicated communities who sustain and pass on their skills and way of life to succeeding generations ensuring the continuance of these important traditions. Official State recognition and inscription onto the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural will raise awareness of these practices and traditions.”
Mr Michael Duggan, speaking on behalf of the Spancilhill Fair Association, commented:
“I am delighted that the Tradition of the Spancilhill International Horse Fair will be included as part of the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. I want to thank the Minister that she saw fit to include this tradition that is over 400 years old as part of the recognised cultural heritage of Ireland. We are very proud of the fair, it brings people from all over Ireland and from other countries.”
Ms Ella Hassett of Headford Lace Project added:
“We are incredibly proud that Headford Lace has been accepted to the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. It means the world to us that this beautiful craft tradition has been recognised for its intrinsic value and that it will be safeguarded alongside the other Irish Laces and celebrated for generations to come.”
The development and extension of Ireland’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage is an integral part of the work of the Department under the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage which requires States to recognise, protect and promote the living cultural heritage of their countries. There is now a total of 38 practices on Ireland’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, all of which were included following rigorous assessment by an expert advisory committee.
Expressions of interest for State recognition and inscription to the National Inventory are accepted by the Department on a rolling basis. Interested parties can find more information on the website https://nationalinventoryich.chg.gov.ie/ or contact the Department at nationalich@tcagsm.gov.ie

Fógraíonn an tAire Martin Aitheantas Stáit do Chleachtais Thábhachtacha de chuid Oidhreacht Chultúrtha Bheo na hÉireann
Tá an tAire Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán, Catherine Martin TD, tar éis an Fardal Náisiúnta um Oidhreacht Chultúrtha dholáimhsithe a leathnú chun aitheantas Stáit a thabhairt do 8 bpríomhchleachtas eile d’Oidhreacht Chultúrtha Bheo na hÉireann.
Is iad na cleachtais atá á n-aithint anois ná Beachaireacht, Déanamh Lása Cróise Chluain Eois, Déanamh Lása Áth Cinn, Siorcas Traidisiúnta Taistil na hÉireann, Aonach Spraoi Taistil na hÉireann, Lá an Dreoilín, Pórú Eallach Dúchasach na hÉireann, Traidisiún Aonach Capall Idirnáisiúnta Chnoc Uarchoille, Tógáil Thraidisiúnta Báid Shaighne, Iascaireacht agus Rásaíocht.
Dúirt an tAire Martin:
“Bíonn eolas agus scil ag teastáil sna hocht gcleachtas oidhreachta cultúrtha beo seo, agus cothaíonn siad ár mothú pobail agus áite. Éiríonn go maith leis na cleachtais seo trí na pobail thiomnaithe a chothaíonn agus a thugann a gcuid scileanna agus slí beatha do na glúnta atá ina ndiaidh, ag cinntiú go leanfar leis na traidisiúin thábhachtacha seo. Cuirfear daoine ar an eolas faoi na cleachtais agus na traidisiúin seo mar gheall ar an aitheantas seo a thabhairt dóibh agus iad a chur ar an bhFardal Náisiúnta um Oidhreacht Chultúrtha dholáimhsithe.”
Dúirt Michael Duggan, agus é ag labhairt thar ceann Chumann Aonach Chnoc Uarchoille:
“Tá ríméad orm go n-áireofar Traidisiún Aonach Idirnáisiúnta Capall Chnoc Uarchoille mar chuid den Fhardal Náisiúnta um Oidhreacht Chultúrtha dholáimhsithe. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil leis an Aire a rinne an cinneadh chun an traidisiún seo atá os cionn 400 bliain d’aois a áireamh mar chuid d’oidhreacht chultúrtha aitheanta na hÉireann. Táimid an-bhródúil as an Aonach, meallann sé daoine ó gach cearn den tír agus ó thortha eile.”
Dúirt Ella Hassett ó Thionscadal Lása Áth Cinn:
“Táimid thar a bheith bródúil gur cuirfear Lása Áth Cinn leis an bhFardal Náisiúnta um Oidhreacht Chultúrtha dholáimhsithe. Is mór againn go bhfuil an traidisiún álainn ceardaíochta seo aitheanta mar gheall ar a luach intreach agus go ndéanfar é a chosaint taobh le Lásaí Éireannacha eile agus go ndéanfaidh na glúnta atá le teacht ceiliúradh air.”
Is cuid dhílis d’obair na Roinne é an Fardal Náisiúnta um Oidhreacht Chultúrtha dholáimhsithe a fhorbairt agus a leathnú faoi Choinbhinsiún UNESCO 2003 um Chosaint na hOidhreachta Cultúrtha doláimhsithe a éilíonn ar Stáit oidhreacht chultúrtha bheo a gcuid tíortha a aithint, a chosaint agus a chur chun cinn. Anois tá 38 cleachtas san iomlán ar Fhardal Náisiúnta na hÉireann um Oidhreacht Chultúrtha dholáimhsithe, agus cuireadh gach ceann acu san áireamh tar éis do choiste comhairleach saineolaithe dian-mheasúnú a dhéanamh orthu.
Glacann an Roinn le léirithe spéise in aitheantas Stáit agus san Fhardal Náisiúnta ar bhonn leanúnach. Is féidir leo siúd a bhfuil spéis acu iontu tuilleadh eolais a fháil ar an suíomh gréasáin https://nationalinventoryich.chg.gov.ie/ nó ríomhphost a sheoladh chuig an Roinn ag nationalich@tcagsm.gov.ie
